Is Playa del Carmen Safe? An Honest Guide for Visitors and Buyers
An honest look at safety in Playa del Carmen: what the travel advisories say, which areas residents prefer, practical tips, and what it means if you are buying property.

It is one of the most searched questions about the Riviera Maya, and it deserves a straight answer. Most visitors and residents in Playa del Carmen never experience a problem, and the town is home to a large international community. Like any growing tourist city, it also has crime, and a few simple habits make a real difference.
What the travel advisories say
Governments publish travel advice by Mexican state. The US State Department has for several years advised travellers to exercise increased caution in Quintana Roo, the state that includes Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, which is a moderate level compared with several other Mexican states. Canada and the UK publish similar guidance. Advisories change, so check the current version before you travel.
Advisories note that most incidents involve disputes between criminal groups rather than tourists, while also mentioning petty crime and occasional violence in tourist areas.
Where people feel safest
Residents tend to recommend:
- Playacar, a gated community with controlled access.
- The centre near Quinta Avenida and the beach, which is busy and well patrolled, especially in the evening.
- Newer gated developments in areas such as Gobernador, Centro Maya and Valle Aurora, with controlled access and 24/7 security.
As in any city, some neighbourhoods further from the centre are less suited to newcomers. Your agent should tell you honestly about each area.
Practical tips
- Use official taxis, ride apps or a pre-booked transfer, especially at night.
- Use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres.
- Keep valuables out of sight on the beach and in cars.
- Avoid buying drugs: it is illegal and it is how many visitors end up in trouble.
- Stay with friends late at night on the busiest nightlife streets.
- Save the emergency number 911, which works across Mexico.
What it means for buyers
If you are buying, safety is part of your property choice:
- Gated communities and buildings with controlled access are the norm for new developments and are what renters expect.
- Check the building's security staff, cameras and access control, and ask about the condominium's track record.
- Good lighting, walkability to services and a well-run HOA support both your peace of mind and the resale value.
